Show Synopsis
The orphaned Mary Lennox returns from India to live with her Uncle, Archibald, in Yorkshire, England. He is a hunchback and an unhappy widower who is submersed in his memories of his dead wife, Lily.
Mary meets and befriends the young maid, Martha and her brother Dickon who encourage her to explore the garden which has been locked since Lily’s death. She meets the old gardener, Ben.
Archibald and his brother, Neville, notice that Mary physically resembles her aunt and sing of “Lily’s Eyes” – where Neville reveals that he had also been in love with Lily.
Mary hears crying and discovers that she has a cousin, Colin, who is confined to bed as his father fears he will become a hunchback like himself. In reality there is nothing wrong with him – and despite Neville and Mrs. Medlock, the housekeeper, trying to keep them apart, they become friends. With the help of Dickon and Martha, Mary encourages Colin to come outside.
Archibald leaves for the continent on the urging of his brother who wants his house entirely to himself and Neville takes the opportunity to try to send Mary away to boarding school. She writes to Archibald urging him to come home.
Liliy’s ghost helps to convince him to return, where he finds Colin running in the garden. He accepts Lily as his own and the ‘dreamers (ghosts) and the ghosts of her parents promise to look over them for the rest of their days.
